The Township Committee is likely to discuss a proposal to cull the deer herd near Lake Valhalla at their meeting on January 23. The Lake Valhalla Civic Association has made a presentation suggesting that the deer population has "exploded" and that bow hunters be brought in to reduce their numbers. Mountain Lakes and other nearby communities have done so, but controversy inevitably results. Anti-hunting activist and Valhalla resident Gladys Nemirow said the overabundance of deer in the area is exaggerated and non-lethal methods should be used. See Daily Record.
Stop the over developing so the deer have someplace to live and eat! That will solve the issue, in the meantime STOP OVER DEVELOPMENT!
There is no place in town left to build on.
One could develop over the aquifer, or has that been protected by a Well Head Ordinance yet?

Do you really think there's a shortage of undeveloped land in Montville?

Having lived in this municipality for 40 years, yes in my humble opinion there is a tremendous shortage of undeveloped land.

I live in Lake Valhalla and WELCOME the deer in my area...it's why I choose to live in the country. How many of you have seen a fawn still wet after being born, or the beauty of a fawn suckling on it's mother? Or the beautiful, soulful eyes of one of these precious animals when they look straight into yours? What this comes down to is the VANITY of the people that do not want their plants and flowers eaten...status is more important than life to most of these people. I will continue to feed our deer and keep them away from the Glen during this hunt, as will my neighbors. I am also a hiker, my dog is in these woods daily and I do NOT welcome the idea of hunters in my back yard.

Although you sign anonymous, you have quietly given away your identity.... ARW (animal rights whacko). "soulful eyes..." give me a break. These creatures, with NO soul, are chewing up our understory and killing our forests and it's OK because you think their cute. Look at the big picture instead of selfishly protecting an occaisonal cheap thrill when you gaze out your window.

Ah, but you're wrong. Some things you don't know about me:
1. I'm a 47 year old woman that moved here with my husband from Wayne about 10 years ago...we wanted to get away from "urban sprawl" and wanted to live in a lake community with wildlife that was still convenient to our workplaces. 2. I'm a Republican. (Yes, there are people that aren't liberals that care about the animals.) 3. My husband and I pay approxiately $10,000 a year in taxes. The majority of this money goes towards "the people", espically the schools and programs to benefit our childern. OUR children were adopetd from the Montville Animal Shelter...one dog and two cats. Most of my hard earned money goes towards something that I can't take advantage of. Hear me bitching? I would LOVE some of my tax dollars to be used towards helping homless, sick and abused animals. 4. I am a compassionate person who happens to be an animal lover, but not an animal activist.
As for the soul thing, don't talk about something that you can't disprove...I would bet my life that those animals have more of a soul than you.

Are you suggesting that animals have souls?

I grew up in Montville Township...You folks should have seen it back in the 60's and 70's...Plenty of woods, orchards, farms, horses, cows and very beautiful indeed. I attended MHS when it first opened and we could sit in our classes and watch the cows at SISCO Farms! It was also affordable! Now you understand why some people want over delevepment to stop. I think Montville is still pretty in many places, but the lack of open land is the major cause of the deer problems. I am for thinning them out only because they are a hazard on the roads (hey, poor things have less and less wooded places to go). It will be interesting to see what happens now.....

I'd say let's listen to the experts, ie, biologists who are dealing with facts and not the issue of whether a deer has a soul of not. We pay these people to assess the situation and plan solutions. Let's let them do their job. Isn't that what happened wit the bear hunt...oops, I forgot. The states's #1 biologist, Jon Corzine, took care of that one.

What do they do with the deer they "thin out"? Hopefully they do something useful with it, like feed the homeless.
