The New Jersey Sate Legislature has passed a bill requiring the infusion of Italian history and culture into the K-12 curriculum. The intention of the legislation is to build and strengthen the cultural identity of Italians and Italian Americans through public educational programs that preserve and promote an accurate, bias free and non stereotyped understanding and awareness of historical and current contributions and accomplishments of people of Italian heritage.
The New Jersey Commission on Italian and Americans of Italian Heritage Cultural and Educational set forth in -PL 2001, Chapter 343 C.18A4-42 of the New Jersey legislature, serves the Department of Education and the public at large to provide curricular resource guides, information and other resources to assist in meeting the requirements of the law for the study of the culture, history, contributions and heritage of Italians and Americans of Italian heritage.
hmmm... Italian history and culture must be the only group not represented in the NJ public educational programs of K-12. Stands to reason since the New Jersey State Legislature felt it necessary to entertain the process of passing a bill into law to require this inclusion.

I am Italian and I cannot understand why any law would be passed to focus on any particular culture or heritage. Our kids should be exposed to ALL cultures and heritages. To pick one or a few out of many makes no sense. In my opinion, this country needs more math and science, so there should be laws to add MORE of those.
this supports my opinion that itilians are minorities.

I believe that the study of the Italian heritage, and the contributions to our country that Americans of Italian descent have made, should, of necessity, be brought to light, and studied. Why the necessity? Because of programs such as "The Sopranos" and "Goodfellas", etc. , Italian-Americans have been stereotyped, and not in a good way. Case in point: WHO POSTED THE HEADLINE:"YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT?"????????????? If that isn't stereotyping, I don't know what is!!! Theresa Ciallella Cavanaugh
