The Daily Record's editorial page writer thinks it was just reporting news as they discovered it. I think it was tacky and could have waited a day or been put elsewhere in the paper.
If you don't like the Daily Record then quit working for them.

It's not that I don't like the Daily Record since I'm grateful for a local paper that covers our town. They used poor judgement with the placement of that story.
And I don't work for them. The Community Advisors board is strictly volunteer. We don't even get a soda unless Fred swipes one out of the office fridge.
I used the term "tacky" because it describes a number of recent Daily Record headlines and articles. And I'm not the only one who has noticed it.
Here's a letter in response to another recent front page article:
"Crash victim more than dealer" To the Editor: I was outraged by the July 5 article, "Denville drug dealer killed in crash." As a friend of the grieving family, a member of the community, and a parent, I am at a loss as to why the Daily Record would choose to report this tragic accident in such a cold and callous manner. Whatever mistakes this young man made in the past by no means justifies a journalistic approach that shows a total lack of sensitivity to his parents...."
I think a community newspaper should have some class and better standards.
2. Young woman's depiction unfair June 26, 2007 •• 157 words •• ID: mor26507352 To the Editor: I was appalled at your tabloid style headline about the double murders in Florham Park on June 21. The young woman who was killed, Jennifer Caliandro, was identified as a "go-go dancer" in the large print headline. In much smaller print underneath you noted that she was also a nursing student. Only in a secondary article buried within the paper did you reveal that she completed a pre-nursing program at Brookdale Community College

Thanks. That is exactly the type of tabloid style headline that many people find offensive.
There are so many places in Morris County that old fashioned investigative reporting is needed. It's a shame they don't pursue those areas instead of hyping people's misfortunes. I think there is a greater market for real journalism.
The daily record stinks. who really cares what they printg?

Hey Ron. Did you get fired from the board of advisers? You're name is gone.

I resigned after it became clear that the community advisors board was just window dressing and didn't have any impact on what did and didn't get published.
The new Executive Editor sat in on exactly one meeting and the new Publisher couldn't be bothered. If they're not interested I figured I shouldn't waste my time either.
People should know that Ron didn't really "resign." He just stopped coming without giving a reason.
The community advisors board, by the way, has nothing to do with what gets published in the main section of the newspaper. It is about opinions on the editorial page.
I only stopped the week before, which was when I finally realized that the Daily Record was beyond help.
I'd gotten used to reporting mistakes (when New Road floods it's because of the Rockaway River, not the Passaic), the idiocy of the Business section (why scream "Stay Away From Real Estate" when a down market is precisely when you should buy?), and Abbott Koloff's predictable loonyness.
But your repeated portrayal of those of us who want our immigration laws enforced as having rascist motives was just too much to stand. I believe that amnesty for illegals is opposed by the majority of (legal) Morris County residents and your advocating in favor of open borders and insulting those who disagree with you puts you - and, as a result, the Daily Record - very out of touch with the community which you serve.
I can't do anything about that, so I decided to stop trying. If the Daily Record ever decides that it wants to seriously consider suggestions on how it may become relevant to Morris County, I'll be glad to return. Until then I'll still be glad to buy you a few margaritas.
It looks like he doesn't want to answer you. Your name was the only one taken off.

Fred answered me by email last week.
I assume they will remove the name of the woman who hasn't attended any meetings this year, but it may be more important to pretend that they have more than two regular participants.
I found the response to the "tacky" reporting rather interesting: it always gets blamed on the "Liberal Media". In the first place, to generalize all media as liberal is really "tacky" and uninformed. And I find it really amusing, considering the Daily Record puts the narrow-minded Neo-con "comic strip", Mallard Fillmore" on the comics pages. Is this not "yellow journalism"? And why isn't the strip being charged for a paid political announcement? I thought opinions could only be published on the Editorial Page? This person has criticized the Learning Disabled, the NEA, all Democrat politicians, academia, and just about everything else that doesn't fit into his narrow-minded little conservative world. Liberal Media? I think not. Terry Cavanaugh, President LDA of NJ
