Time to re-appoint committee members
Posted by Ron Soussa at 2:29 PM

From Planning Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment, to Historical Preservation Review Commission and Library Board, now is the season for new faces to appear and some old ones to fade off.
How do Montville residents feel about the people who make many decisions that affect our town? Why don't more people volunteer?

Who has time to serve on committees? We're too busy trying to pay the crazy taxes in this town!

Please list the towns where the taxes are not "crazy".

I think more people would be happy to volunteer. However we are not asked by our elected officials. It appears the officials already heave people in mind that they want to serve on these boards. Perhaps we should have an open forum letting the residents know the township is looking for volunteers.

I volunteered without being asked, and was thrilled to be appointed. And no, I don't have any political connections. And yes, I work full time. I do think it might be useful to have this blog post when committees are searching for volunteers, so that those who want to volunteer can choose something that most closely matches their interests. You'd be surprised to find how many committees there are, and how many people go out of their way to participate. It's a great way to meet your fellow Montville residents and to do some good for the community into the bargain!

Truscha, What are you talking about? Every year, there are posts on the town's website and in the town's new letter (sent to every home) seeking people to volunteer to participate on various committee's and commissions. Perhaps you need to do a little more homework before you post criticisms.

While I don’t usually post on the blog, its impt to respond and clarify. If citizens aren't aware that the Township Committee seeks new volunteers for our committees every year, then we should increase our efforts to get the word out.

The current TC has made significant strides in re-activating committees and commissions. We publicize the appointment process thru the Montville Messenger, town website, and word of mouth. Generally the deadline is Dec 1st for the following year. A standardized application form is available the town clerk's office. Anyone interested in volunteering may contact the municipal clerk (973-331-3300) or one of the TC members. There are also 30+ other organizations that serve our community. A few include the first aid squad, fire departments, Kiwanis, Rotary, UNICO, etc. All welcome productive new members.

The municipal web site lists local organizations. However in reviewing, it could be more user friendly. Will bring this to the attention of our administrator.

Also, I applaud Truscha and others who sign their names to posts. This enables us to foster better communication. We need to hear from all Montville residents and truly appreciate all constructive suggestions. Please get involved and let us know your thoughts. This is YOUR government and it is only as good as you help to make it.

Best wishes to all for a healthy New Year,
Deb Nielson

I attended the installation of new committee members and volunteers last night at the municipal building. The event was moving and inspiration for me. I was filled with pride and humility by all of the Montville residents that volunteer their time and energy to Montville Township. I retract my previous misguided comment regarding the process for volunteering. I am humbled by the dedication and commitment of the Montville township volunteers and apologize for my hastily spoken words.

Truscha, It is a good day when someone acknowledges a mistake. You're a classy person. Good luck with your volunteerism!
