Guest Blogger - Legalize Trade in Organs
Posted by Ron Soussa at 5:55 PM

A reader sent in this email sevaral weeks ago: "My brother has been waiting for a kidney transplant for months. Why shouldn't someone be able to sell him one"?

And coincidentally Howard sent this article today: To Save Lives, Legalize Trade in Organs. See video.

What does Montville think?

I would be for allowing it.

Money might persuade a dieing person or their family to donate organs to save a life instead of burying them.

I am all for saving lives. If money motivates people to give organs to save lifes, I am all for it.

I don't know the rule in Jersey now but perhaps a less controversial way to increase organ availability is to make the program "opt out" rather than "opt in".

Currently, at least here, the family may still be able to override the dying person's last wish. That's sad. That should be prevented.

Plus, this web site will have to add an "Organs for sale" category to the classifieds.

In 10 years we will be able to grow organs from stem-type cells. It's coming!

Organ Transplant Racket Busted In India

"We have taken your kidney," a masked man calmly explained. "If you tell anyone, we'll shoot you." Mr. Salim was one of the last victims in an organ transplant racket that police believe sold up to 500 kidneys to clients who traveled to India from around the world over the past nine years.
